Hiring a guide or guided tour is also advisable to help you navigate and ensure you don’t miss any important sights.
Hiking Mount Merapi, the Loveliness Of Fire Mountain
My mind went blank momentarily when a friend said he would climb Mount Merapi with his networks. It had been a while since I last climbed a mountain, Mount Rinjani, in 2006. I doubted I would be able to hike Mount Merapi. On top of that, Mount Merapi is a lively volcano. On the other hand, I knew that ascending Mount Merapi would be a fantastic thing to do. I knew that the landscape of Mount Merapi was so lovely. In fact, from the top of the volcano, you can smoothly see Mount Sundoro, Sumbing, Lawu, and Merbabu. This is why I finally decided to join the climb: that and my love of nature.
The Climb to Merapi
There’s something special about viewing the sunrise from the uppermost peak. You see the land spread out below you for miles everywhere. The sun is in the aloofness, creating glooms over the landscape. It’s an unbelievable view, and I want to share it with you. In this guide, I want to share my experience climbing Merapi with you and reveal everything you need to know about climbing Merapi. It’s a trip I can position for you. I’ll start at the very start.
Yogyakarta to Merapi
It takes almost two times to go from Yogyakarta to Merapi (New Selo Basecamp). It’s a long drive, and though you can do it by motorbike, I recommend driving. A good reason for this is that most people climb Merapi in the evening. Usually, around 10-11 pm. They do it to watch the sunrise from the peak of Merapi.
Of course, climbing Merapi during the day is possible, but most people don’t because it’s super hot. An alternative to climbing throughout the day is hiking to Mount Merapi’s top in the evening. This is an excellent option to camp at the top of Merapi. I digress. The first time I mounted Merapi, we departed from Yogyakarta at 10:30 p.m. and arrived around 01:00 a.m. at New Selo, the base campsite for Mount Merapi.
When you reach New Selo, the hike twitches. It’s around 4 km from New Selo to the conference. In terms of height, the trek is from 2200 m to 2900 m above sea level. It’s four kilometers at an elevation of 700 meters on what can feel like a closely perpendicular track.
Most people need 4 hours to ascent from New Selo to the peak of Stand Merapi. The first time I climbed required 5.5 hours to hike to the first peak. When the sun rose, I was not smooth at the top of the volcano, but I was nearly there! The darkness (my flashlight was not decent enough), my poor stamina, the cold (luckily, it didn’t rain!), and the stiff wind slowed me down. I was so lucky because I had a great companion for the climb.
There are two peaks to Merapi. The first highest is before the actual dip summit of the volcano. It’s a significant, relatively flat bowel stretching for a square kilometer. This is where people typically camp hiking to the top of Merapi. People call it Pasar Bubrah.
The second peak is the crater peak. This is the tricky bit, which people start to climb just as the sun rises. It’s a 200-meter elevation up a shale slope of loose stones. When you climb this slope, it feels like you are taking three steps forward and two steps back. It’s the most exhausting part of the climb, and many people never actually make it to the top.
For many people, climbing down is much more complicated than climbing up. One thing I can say about the promotion down, though, is it’s a lot faster than on the way up. I made it in 2 hours, which is probably slow, but I felt proud. Dusty, weary but proud.
Nevertheless, I was super tired; the journey was not painful because the scenery was unique. It is so beautiful that I have difficulty putting it into words, so check out my movies here. My legs remained sore, but I was pleased that I had decided to climb Merapi. It was a great experience with fantastic new friends and good companions! What else do you need, right?
The Return to Selo
After reaching the summit and having time to enjoy the views and the crater, make your way back to Selo. The descent can be just as stimulating as the climb, as the ground can be slippery. Remember to listen to your guide and be careful.
